Dr Luke Hames-Brown

I am a Doctor specialising in General Practice with an interest in Search and Rescue Medicine having been a doctor in both Mountain and Lowland Rescue.
Over three years since my symptoms began I think of myself as fortunate that I seem to have a relatively slow progressing form of this disease. I want to use this to make a difference, to advocate for those affected by MND.
When I was first told I might have MND I said that I wanted to do something to raise money and awareness, to try and help reach a point where others didn’t have to feel the same fear and devastation that my family and I did. I subsequently took on the challenge of walking the 84 mile length of Hadrian’s Wall to raise funds for My Name’5 Doddie foundation and the MNDA. I have remained involved in fundraising since and have become involved in research through My Name’5 Doddie foundation Discovery Network (advisory board member) and I am a member of the Independent oversight committee for the UK MND Research Institute (UKMNDRI).
As a patient and clinician I strongly believe in the vital importance of a coordinated approach to fundraising, campaigning and research. I believe that by working together, the MND community can achieve our dream of effective treatments, and ultimately a cure for this disease.
MND can dominate and define lives, however, we can control the narrative of that definition by using our voice and our determination to push for change.
